Fish Species

Other great Florida Keys fish to catch and release!

Other species--I have described some of the most common game fish that we hunt with a fly here in the Florida Keys, but that isn’t all of what can be possible to catch with a fly. The list is endless. Here are just a few pictures of fish we have caught on flies. And check back we are constantly catching new and beautiful different species. Enjoy!

Barracuda—Another unappreciated fish of the flats. One of the fastest fish that swims, the barracuda, can amaze you with lightning fast strikes, blistering runs and unpredictable grey hounding jumps and tail walks. If you have never heard the sound of fly line whistling through the water, this is the fish that can do it. Large ‘cudas are very wary and require long casts for them to be interested in your offering. Their eye sight is unbelievably good. If they see you or the boat, it is over before it starts. Spotting fish is sometimes a little tricky because they are typically found sitting motionless along a slight drop off or depression facing the current. Presentation of the fly must be 5-6 even up to 12 feet in front of the fish. Sometimes the take is so fast you don’t really see the fish move from the ambush point he was sitting at to the point where the fly is. All of a sudden there the fish is on the end of your line with your fly splayed in its mouth. A long hard strip, game on! Make a circle with your index finger and thumb on your line control hand, hold your rod high and watch your line and backing disappear.
